Clean Shore Corps

Students will perform a trash survey in their own neighborhood, then one at the beach at Gateway. After comparing the results of the two surveys, students will identify which trash is the most prevalent, and come up with ways to reduce the trash. Rangers will provide lesson plans and equipment for the beach pick up. Please note that this program requires transportation between two points within the park.

Explore the dunes and gain a personal experience of how they came to be. Observe how winds and powerful waves work to create and erode moving sand dunes. Experience and appreciate the variety of plant communities found in the dunes. Follow the legacy of early dunes scientist, Henry Chandler Cowles, and hike from the beach over foredunes and through forests. By exploring the environment, discover the forces that shape the dunes and produce this unique succession of plants. Program availabilty: Spring - summer - fall. Age group: 5th grade and up. Location: West Beach. Length: 1.5 - 2.0 hours.

Using basic sampling and collecting equipment, students explore the island from beach to bay to learn how the habitats weave together to form a barrier island ecosystem. This program is designed for returning groups and groups that are studying barrier island ecosystems. Students will get wet to their knees. Wear snug footwear and clothing that can get wet. This program is designed for 7th-12th grade, and lasts 1.5 hours. *Note: Offered until mid-October.

The peaceful surroundings--white sugar-sand beaches, clumps of golden sea oats, and the soothing sounds of coastal waves pounding on the shores of a long barrier island--belie the serious purpose of Fort Pickens, located on Santa Rosa Island in Florida. One of the largest brick forts built in the United States, Fort Pickens provided the setting for a serious effort by a small group of men to avert or at least postpone the outbreak of the Civil War.

Students explore park ranger jobs through meeting a ranger in an interactive distance learning program. Students learn about job responsibilities by using objects from the ranger's backpack as discussion prompts. Program was specially developed for classes reading Exploring Parks with Ranger Dockett in their Houghton Mifflin Harcourt language arts textbook. Can be adapted for other grade levels.
