WASHINGTON — The National Park Service (NPS) has completely resurfaced Wise Road in Northwest Washington in time for the start of the school year. On Friday, Aug. 23, Wise Road NW, which connects Oregon Avenue NW and Beach Drive, will reopen before the afternoon rush hour.
“It was important to us to reopen Wise Road before school starts to make it easier on parents and other neighbors who travel through Rock Creek Park,” Superintendent Julia Washburn said. “This marks one of the last steps before we complete the entire Beach Drive project.”
The three-year construction project is on track for completion this fall. Stay up to date by visiting go.nps.gov/beachdrive and signing up for Nixle alerts by texting BEACHDRIVE to 888777.
Please do not enter closed areas of Rock Creek Park until construction is complete. These closures keep park visitors safe and help the NPS complete work faster. If you do enter the closed area, you may receive a citation.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers designed Beach Drive in 1897 to improve access to America's first urban national park. Today, drivers take more than 12 million trips through Rock Creek Park every year, and more than 40,000 people enjoy the park every weekend.
