What You Need to Know Navigation

The National Park Service (NPS) is following guidance from the White House, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and state and local public health authorities, as we begin to increase recreational access and services. The NPS is working servicewide with federal, state, and local public health authorities to closely monitor the COVID-19 pandemic and using a phased approach to increase access on a park-by-park basis.

Ranger's Tips

  • Plan Like a Park Ranger- Check out these ten tips to help plan the best trip to Rock Creek Park
  • Bring a map - Download or take a photo of a park map. You may not have a cell signal when you get to the park.
  • Park in a designated parking area only--not on the grass and not in the street. Violators may be ticketed or towed.
    • Rock Creek Park Nature Center - 5200 Glover Road NW, Washington, DC - Parking lot is open--approximately 120 parking spots available. Nature center is closed. Excellent access to park trails.
    • Picnic Grove 13 - no address, see map - This parking lot is located on Glover Road / Ridge Road (depending upon your GPS) at the closest picnic grove with a large shelter near the Nature Center. Approximately 60 parking spots are available here.
    • Rock Creek Park Tennis Center / Picnic Grove 24 / Carter Barron Amphitheatre - 1610 Kennedy St NW, Washington, DC 20011 or the big lot immediately adjacent to 4850 Colorado Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20011 - This is an extremely large parking lot with over 250 parking spaces. Walk down Morrow Road. Be careful--this is a very steep road--walk with any recreational equipment with wheels instead of riding down the hill. Exercise on this road is not recommended for visitors with heart conditions, bad knees, difficulty breathing, or other serious medical conditions affected or exacerbated by traveling on steep inclines.
    • Beach Drive NW & Military Road, NW @ Parking Lots 6-10 - Share the road with recreationists as you drive very slowly to access over 200 parking spaces.
    • Paved Pull-out Spaces - Various small paved pull-outs spots for 1-10 cars may be open for parking in various locations in Rock Creek Park. Park in designated areas only--on pavement, not on the grass. Cars parked outside of designated paved parking areas may be ticketed or towed.
    • Street Parking: Some park sites have very limited to no parking. In this case, park on city streets following all posted and citywide laws and regulations.
    • NOTE: Parking areas may close at any time without notice.
