Queen Victoria, who ruled nearly a quarter of the world's population, called Queen Emma of Hawai'i her "affectionate friend." Born at Pelekane, below Pu'ukohola Heiau, Emma was the granddaughter of John Young, Kamehameha's foreign advisor. She married King Kamehameha IV and went on to found the Queen's Hospital, an institution that continues to serve the people of the Islands to this day.
