Weather

Pecos National Historical Park is located at nearly 7,000 feet in altitude within the high desert region of Northern New Mexico. Because of the altitude and the high desert climate, the weather at Pecos varies season to season and sometimes even year to year. Please check the local weather conditions before embarking on a journey to the park.

Spring

Spring at Pecos can be difficult to gauge. From March through the middle of May, temperatures can be sunny and 70 degrees Fahrenheit one day and then be 30 degrees Fahrenheit and snowing the next day. Make sure to plan accordingly and prepare for the weather.

Summer

Summers have a more predictable pattern, starting out warm and dry from late May through June. Remember to keep hydrated and wear sun protection during these hot summer days as temperatures can range from 80 degrees Fahrenheit to as high as 100 degrees Fahrenheit. June tends to be the hottest month of the summer as it starts to cool with monsoon rains from July through late September. Most of the precipitation is accumulated through the monsoon months, averaging about 9" of rainfall. Monsoon rains can be especially unpredictable and dangerous due to the sporadic nature of these storms. Be careful when you are out hiking and take note of any lightning and thunder on the horizon. When it roars, stay indoors! Make sure to check the weather conditions before going out for a hike.

Autumn

Autumn provides a nice break from the hot temperatures of the summer. From early September through early to mid October, temperatures are warm (roughly 70 degrees Fahrenheit) during the day and cool at night. Some say autumn is the best time of the year to visit because of the changing colors and beautiful blue skies.

Winter

Winters can be brutally cold in northern New Mexico. Pecos is no exception. Prepare yourself for the colder temperatures by wearing layers. Expect snowfall November through March, where temperatures can range from 30-40 degrees Fahrenheit during the day down to the teens at night. Snowfall averages about 20" for the Pecos area. More snowfall often accumulates in the Pecos Wilderness, just north of the park. If you are planning on exploring the park during the winter, pay special attention to the road conditions and park closures as some spots such as Glorieta Pass may have adverse conditions.
