Visiting in Winter

Occasional snowstorms bring a new perspective on what life might have been like hundreds of years ago, before central heating.

New Mexico is generally sunny year-round, but that doesn't mean it never gets cold!
Winters can bring snow as well as temperatures down into the teens F (-7 degrees C) or colder at night. Snowfall averages about 20" for the Pecos area. More snowfall often accumulates in the Pecos Wilderness, just north of the park. Winter days can also be sparkling and sunny with highs in the 50s or even 60s F (10-15 degrees C). Dressing in warm layers is a good idea, so you can adjust as you go.

Check Current Conditions Before You Come

Find out what's happening on the roads with the New Mexico Roads website. On snowy days, the park often opens later in the day for staff and visitor safety, and is sometimes closed completely. Delays and closures are posted on the Current Conditions page. The local word is that the Rowe exit from I-25 and Highway 63 toward Pecos are often plowed before the Glorieta exit and Highway 50.

What To Expect on Trails

Ancestral Sites Trail

This trail is kept snow-free as staffing allows, however some ice and snow may still be present. Walk carefully.

Glorieta Battlefield Trail

The battlefield is very shady with many trees, so it tends to hold snow and ice. The access via Old Denver Highway is typically not plowed in winter, so the trailhead may be inaccessible after a storm.

South Pasture Loop Trail

These old ranch roads-turned-trails can be quite muddy after rains or snows. If the gate at the Trading Post and Highway 63 closed, the road to the trailhead is closed. During big snow events, cross country skiing or snowshoeing may be possible.

Ranger Programs in Winter

There are usually fewer ranger programs in winter, but the Ancestral Sites Tour is still offered regularly. Check the calendar to find out what's on during your visit.
