    On Sept. 13, Grand Canyon wildlife managers successfully relocated 100 bison from the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. All bison were transferred to the Intertribal Buffalo Council, which transported them to the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe in South Dakota. Since reduction efforts began in 2018, park staff have removed 306 bison from the North Rim, with 282 transferred to eight different American Indian tribes through an agreement with the Intertribal Buffalo Council.

    From February 8 to February 10, a team will be cutting down and applying herbicide to invasive salt cedars (Tamarix spp.) in the Hot Springs area. During this time, visitors may encounter a temporary closure along the river from Gravel Pit to Hot Springs Canyon.

    Starting next week, the National Park Service (NPS) will begin active efforts to remove invasive smallmouth bass and green sunfish from the Colorado River Slough below the Glen Canyon Dam in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area

    The National Park Service is performing preservation, maintenance, and repair work on sections of the historic Espada Aqueduct, the oldest Spanish aqueduct in the United States, located in San Antonio Missions National Historical Park. The $290,000 project to repair leaks and remove sediment and debris is funded by the Great American Outdoors Act and expected to be completed in March.

All bison were transferred to the Intertribal Buffalo Council, who transported the animals to the Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma and the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe of South Dakota.

    Researchers with rare oak tree

    Researchers from a coalition of institutions have identified a living specimen of an oak that was presumed extinct for more than a decade: Quercus tardifolia (Q. tardifolia). The tree in Big Bend National Park in Texas is in dire condition, facing fungal infection and elevated fire risk due to climate change. Work is underway in collaboration with the National Park Service to reduce immediate threats.

This certification recognizes the exceptional quality of Curecanti’s night skies and the opportunities to enhance visitor experiences through astronomy-based interpretive programming. Curecanti is the first National Recreation Area to be certified under this program.
