As the San Francisco Bay Area Network coho and steelhead monitoring crew wraps up the 2024-2025 spawner season, we are looking back at one of the busiest winters since the beginning of this monitoring program! We observed increased coho spawning in all three creeks we monitor—Olema, Pine Gulch, and Redwood Creeks. Olema took the cake with the strongest cohort of all.

In early October, biologists with the San Francisco Bay Area Network Coho & Steelhead Monitoring Program assisted the California Department of Fish & Wildlife in collecting 40 juvenile coho salmon from Olema Creek. Now, these fish are living in the Don Clausen Fish Hatchery located at Lake Sonoma in Sonoma County.

Since the early 2000s, ecologists who monitor rocky intertidal ecosystems each year have noted declines in a key intertidal seaweed commonly called rockweed. Rockweed is considered a foundational species, meaning that its presence is so important that without it the entire ecosystem would change radically. At Channel Islands National Park, marine ecologists are working with local scientists to understand the best methods to restore rockweed.

Two-year summary of findings from amphibian monitoring in Naval Live Oaks Area of Gulf Islands National Seashore, near Pensacola, Florida. Treefrogs and other amphibians are monitored at two sites near freshwater ponds using PVC pipes and plywood coverboards. Amphibian community composition and changes in the relative abundance of common species are tracked over time as indicators of park ecological health.
