Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a reproduction if the document does not infringe the privacy rights of an individual, group, or corporation. These specified conditions of authorized use include:

  • non-commercial and non-profit study, scholarship, or research, or teaching
  • criticism, commentary, or news reporting
  • as a NPS preservation or security copy
  • as a research copy for deposit in another institution

If a user later uses a copy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use," the user may be personally liable for copyright, privacy, or publicity infringement. This institution's permission to obtain a photographic, xerographic, digital, or other copy of a document doesn't indicate permission to publish, exhibit, perform, reproduce, sell, distribute, or prepare derivative works from this document without first obtaining permission from the copyright holder and from any private individual, group, or corporation shown or otherwise recorded.

Permission to publish, exhibit, perform, reproduce, prepare derivative works from, sell, or otherwise distribute the item must be obtained by the user separately in writing from the holder of the original copyright (or if the creator is dead from his/her heirs) as well as from any individual(s), groups, or corporations whose name, image, recorded words, or private information (e.g., employment information) may be reproduced in the source material. The holder of the original copyright isn't necessarily the National Park Service. The National Park Service is not legally liable for copyright, privacy, or publicity infringement when materials are wrongfully used after being provided to researchers for "fair use."

This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if fulfillment of the order is judged in violation of copyright or federal or state privacy or publicity law.

History

Independence National Historical Park (INDE) was authorized by an act of Congress on June 28, 1948, and was formally established on July 4, 1956, "preserving for the benefit of the American people as a national historical park certain historical structures and properties of outstanding and national significance…associated with the American Revolution and the founding and growth of the United States." Located in the Society Hill, Old City, and Germantown neighborhoods of Philadelphia, Independence National Historical Park encompasses not only such famous sites and artifacts as Independence Hall, Congress Hall, and the Liberty Bell, but over twenty other structures, gardens, squares, and cemeteries.

In 1985, the park published its first administrative history, Independence: The Creation of a National Park. Written by contract historian Constance M. Greiff of Heritage Studies Inc., the book explains how the park was first established and traces its development through the early 1980s. It is divided into nine chapters, each describing a major phase in the park's history. The book concludes with a discussion of the park's Bicentennial celebrations in 1976, a period in which many special projects at the park originated, including the administrative history project. The idea for Independence was conceived in conjunction with the Bicentennial Oral History Project and was funded by INDE and the Eastern National Parks and Monuments Association.

Administrative history projects serve many important purposes for National Park Service units. Administrative histories are an opportunity for the National Park Service to record, preserve, and analyze its own history. Written primarily for current and future park managers and staff, administrative histories inform contemporary and future policy and decision-making. Furthermore, administrative histories situate national parks within broader social, political, and historical contexts. They record movements leading to a park's establishment, provide legislative background, and tell a history that extends beyond park administration. Administrative histories also reveal how the park service meets the needs of the public and interprets American history. With Independence, Greiff not only tells the story of INDE's history, but paints a more nuanced picture of the park in relation to the City of Philadelphia, the state of Pennsylvania, and the country as a whole.

Greiff relied on documentary evidence including correspondence, memoranda, and reports created by the park's staff and its early founders, as well as newspaper clippings and published articles. She also interviewed a number of individuals who were influential in the first thirty years of the park's history. These interviews remain a fascinating source of information about one of the nation's most notable parks.

An abridged version of the administrative history was published as Independence: The Creation of a National Park by the University of Pennsylvania Press in 1987.

Series Descriptions

Series I: Interviews and Biographical Information, [1947-1988], undated (bulk dates: 1969-1982)
This series is arranged alphabetically by the individual's last name.
Series I contains transcripts of interviews with individuals involved with the founding of the park and the first thirty years of its administration. These interviews reflect three separate oral history projects. The first round of interviews were conducted from 1969-1970 by the Columbia University Oral History Research Office (later renamed the Columbia Center for Oral History), and predominately feature interviews with park historians and superintendents. After INDE's Bicentennial celebrations in 1976, the park launched its Bicentennial Oral History Project, in which 75 park service staff members were interviewed. This series also includes oral history interviews conducted by Constance Greiff from 1980-1984. Some interview transcript files also contain correspondence as well as biographical information in the form of resumes, newspaper clippings, and other articles relating to the interview subject. Researchers should note that the date span of the series represents the original dates of the interview material. In many cases, these interviews are accompanied by Greiff's notes from the early 1980s. One of these interviews post-dates the publication of "Independence".

Series II: Building Research Files, [1941-1984], undated
This series is arranged alphabetically by building. Research files on related non-park structures can be found at the end of the series.
Series II contains Greiff's research files on individual park buildings such as the Bishop White House, Franklin Court, and Independence Hall. Materials include correspondence, articles, newspaper clippings, and reports related to the restoration and reconstruction of several park structures, as well as buildings that had been demolished, including the Jayne Building. Researchers should note that the date span of the series represents the original dates of photocopied research material. In many cases, these photocopies are accompanied by Greiff's notes from the early 1980s.

Series III: Topic Research Files, [1947-1984], undated
This series is arranged alphabetically by topic.
Series III contains materials on a number of subjects related to the development of Independence National Historical Park. It includes correspondence, reports, newspaper clippings, and published articles, as well as excerpts from books on Philadelphia history. This series also contains Greiff's lists of manuscript source materials. Researchers should note that the date span of the series represents the original dates of photocopied research material. In many cases, these photocopies are accompanied by Greiff's notes from the early 1980s.

Series IV: Working Files, [1939-1983], undated
This series is arranged alphabetically.
Series IV contains material collected by Greiff over the course of researching the book. Much of the series is composed of photocopies of early documents related to the founding of the park, including early correspondence and reports from the Independence Hall Association, the Independence National Historical Park Advisory Committee, and the enabling legislation that established the park. Documents regarding park planning can also be found here, as well as Superintendent's reports, interpretive plans, and newspaper clippings. Researchers should note that the date span of the series represents the original dates of photocopied research material. In many cases, these photocopies are accompanied by Greiff's notes from the early 1980s.

Series V: Manuscript: Independence: The Creation of a National Park, 1982, 1985

This series is arranged alphabetically.
Series IV contains two copies of the administrative history report: one a published copy of the book, the other, Greiff's manuscript typescript copy. The photographs, maps, and illustrations from the manuscript copy of "Independence" have been separated into folders. This series also contains Greiff's outline for the final document.

Series VI: Oral History Interview Tapes, 1980-1984, undated

This series is arranged alphabetically by the individual's last name.
Series VI contains audiocassette tapes of interviews that Constance Greiff conducted while researching "Independence". Interview subjects include such notable individuals in the history of the park as architect Penelope Hartshorne Batcheler, Superintendent Hobart "Hobie" Cawood, architect Charles E. Peterson, and Philadelphia city planner Edmund Bacon. This series also includes and audiocassette recording of Constance Greiff presenting a talk entitled "The Wars of Independence" at the Athenaeum of Philadelphia's annual meeting in 1982.
