Governors Island was one of the longest continually operated military bases in the country, operated for two centuries, by the U.S. Army and later the U.S. Coast Guard until its closure in 1996.

Governors Island National Monument is open this winter, Wed thru Sun and holiday Mondays. Winter operations are, Castle Williams guided tours and Fort Jay courtyard closed until April. Check the Guided Tours page on this site for details.
The rest of the island is open 7 days a week, check Govisland.com for activities around the rest of the island.
