![]() NPS / Kirke Wrench Golden Gate National Recreation Area is home to over 500 different types of birds. It is also located along the Pacific Flyway, a North-South migratory path that sees millions of birds gathering and traveling through each year in search of food sources or heading to breeding sites. In general, quiet forests, meadows, and coastlines away from developed areas (particularly in the mornings) are the best places to see some of the less common birds. Keep in mind basic birding etiquette; tread lightly and quietly and please follow park rules by refraining from using broadcast bird calls to elicit responses. ![]() NPS / Tim Jordan Birding 101Experienced birders confidently identify birds by just a glimpse or hearing their calls. If you are new to the hobby, think of it like identifying new people you meet. Observe their characteristics, like size, shape, sounds, posture, flight pattern, and walking behavior, as well as the place you saw them, as identifiers. As a next step, notice the field marks, which are colored or patterned places on a bird’s body, head, and wings. Remember that a bird’s feathers, or plumage, change over time as a juvenile bird molts into its adult plumage or an adult molts into its breeding plumage. Identifying birds by ear is essential for improving your birding techniques. Expert birders can identify thousands of songs. Bird songs, which can be quite elaborate, are used to attract a mate or defend territorial boundaries; calls are used to find family members, announce the approach of a predator, or share information about food sources. You can look at species lists to know what birds to expect in a particular park. Carrying the right equipment is key for successful birding. All you need:
