Two major Civil War armies clashed in and around Fredericksburg in four pivotal battles within an 18-month span, resulting in over 100,000 casualties. Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania County Battlefields National Military Park manages these four battlefields (Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, the Wilderness, and Spotsylvania Court House) and historical structures (Chatham Manor, Ellwood Manor, the "Stonewall" Jackson Death Site, and Salem Church). Included in the park are two visitor centers (at Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville).

Some people choose to visit one battlefield a day, while others choose to do a longer tour including multiple battlefields. Each battlefield features its own driving tour and walking trails. We know that your visit to this hallowed ground will be a memorable one - no matter the season or the time you have available.

 

Park Places

Fredericksburg Battlefield

The Army of the Potomac and Army of Northern Virginia clashed in December 1862, in what became a striking loss for the United States.

Chancellorsville Battlefield

After a long winter, the Army of the Potomac met the Army of Northern Virginia at Chancellorsville.

Wilderness Battlefield

The Battle of the Wilderness was an intense two-day battle and the first clash between Confederate General Lee and US General Grant.

Spotsylvania Battlefield

At Spotsylvania, the Union and Confederate armies engaged in a battle foreshadowed the intensifying nature of the fights to come.
