Travel in the Black Hills Region

Every year, throughout the summer, travelers in the Black Hills can expect several things. Small towns come alive as thousands of visitors frequent hotels, restaurants, shops and tourist destinations. Road construction projects take place around the region, both in Wyoming and South Dakota, as well as neighboring states (North Dakota, Montana, Nebraska, etc.). National and state parks, as well as privately-run tourist destinations, become crowded, especially during the middle of the day. (10 am through 3 pm).

Visits to Devils Tower National Monument are often a short stop during a busy vacation schedule. We encourage people to research road conditions, vehicle restrictions, and other relevant information to plan their trips. Below are several resources to assist your planning.

Public Transportation

Vehicles may be rented in Gillette, WY or Rapid City, SD. There is no public transportation available to Devils Tower National Monument.

Airports

The nearest commercial airports are the Gillette-Campbell County Airport in Gillette, WY and the Rapid City Regional Airport in Rapid City, SD.

 

Sturgis Motorcycle Rally

The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally takes place during the second week of August every year. Tens of thousands of motorcyclists gather in the Black Hills region, and often visit particular sites on certain days. The "Ride to Devils Tower" usually occurs on Wednesday of that week.

Devils Tower National Monument prepares for the visitation of thousands of motorcycles on that day. Volunteer groups work with park staff to organize parking. The Devils Tower Natural History Association sponsors a shuttle service from the long vehicle parking and picnic areas up to the visitor center. Visitors are encouraged to use the shuttle service.
