Are you planning a visit to Capulin Volcano and wondering what clothes to pack? What you choose to bring should depend on the forecasted weather and the time of year.

During summer, most visitors prefer short sleeves due to the warmer temperatures; some also wear long pants to combat insect bites. It is recommended to bring layers when visiting in winter. No matter what time of year, it is recommended to have a rain jacket, a long-sleeve shirt, long pants, and a good pair of shoes within reach.

Weather in New Mexico is unpredictable; we can get snow in June and 60 degrees in January. Come prepared for any type of weather when visiting. No matter what time of year visitors come, it will be dry with low humidity. Make sure there is plenty of water available to drink while exploring the Park.

Spring is our windy season as Capulin transitions into the warmer months. Wind is almost constant this time of year and gusts of 50 mph or higher are not uncommon. Bring a wind jacket and extra layers to protect yourself against the strong winds. Not only do these high winds make the temperature feel colder, they can also pick up dust and other debris. Check at the Visitor Center to see if hiking is recommended on windy days.

The spring winds usually bring warmer temperatures with them. However, springtime temperatures can fluctuate drastically. There is always a chance of a late season frost or snowstorm. Always check the weather before visiting and pack accordingly.

Summers are generally warm with daytime temperatures in the 80s and 90s. However, once the sunsets, the temperature will drop to the 50s and 60s; have warmer clothing available for the cooler evenings. Due to the temperatures, high UV index, and exposure to the sun, it is recommended to use sunscreen and to wear a hat and sunglasses. Sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses are recommended year round when visiting the Volcano. Learn more about summer hiking at Capulin Volcano.

As the temperatures drop with the coming of fall, layers are recommended. Fall temperatures can be pleasant during the day, usually in the 50s and 60s, but they can plummet below freezing at night. Have long sleeves, hats, gloves, and warm coats with you when visiting. If freezing temperatures are predicted along with rain, snow, or ice, consider packing traction devices for hiking.

During winter, daytime temperatures are usually in the 20s and 30s, dropping to the teens or lower at night. Capulin Volcano can experience snow and ice storms this time of year; check the weather and wear clothing appropriate for the temperatures. If hiking after a weather incident, consider bringing trekking poles for support and traction devices; sandals and open-toed shoes are not recommended this time of year.
