Visitors that come to Capulin Volcano during winter usually have questions about the Park. Is Capulin Volcano open during the winter months? What temperatures and weather should they expect during their visit? What, if any, special clothing is required during winter?

The Visitor Center parking lots are open 24/7 year-round, allowing visitors to access the hiking trails at the base of the volcano even when the Visitor Center is closed; the trails are open sunrise to sunset. Volcano Road is only open to vehicle traffic during set hours; when the road is closed at the end of day, hikers and bikers are allowed to use the road to access the top of Capulin Volcano. No pass needs to be physically displayed on your windshield but, a park entrance fee must be purchased at the Visitor Center before driving to the top of the volcano. Learn more about the Park entrance fee at Capulin Volcano.

After acquiring a pass, visitors may access all open parking lots and roads that are open; there may be road closures due to construction, rockslides, or weather conditions. Trails are open year-round, except if posted otherwise. Learn more about Capulin Volcano alerts and conditions. Please check out operating seasons and hours at Capulin Volcano.

Snow and ice can make the roads and trails slick during the winter season. Most snowstorms occur in the area in January and February but, snow can occur as early as September and as late as June. Check the weather a few days before visiting the Park and make sure to pack clothing appropriate for the temperatures and weather conditions.

During the winter, day-time temperatures are typically in the 20 or 30s, with night-time temps in the teens or lower; occasionally temperatures can drop to below zero. Wearing layers to combat the wind and cold is recommended when visiting. If hiking, have traction devices and/or trekking poles for stability available if needed.

Hypothermia during winter is a real threat. Cooler temperatures and high winds can bring on symptoms of hypothermia quickly and unexpectedly. When planning a hike when visiting, consider the temperatures and windspeeds when planning. On cold, windy days, wearing warm layers is recommended; also consider taking shorter hikes and limiting exposure to the elements.

When planning a winter hike, check the times for sunrises and sunsets. Sunsets occur much earlier during the winter season; it is recommended that hikers hit the trail earlier in the day to avoid hiking at night. An earlier starting time also allows for time to navigate snowy or icy spots on the trail. Bring a flashlight or headlamp when hiking just in case.

When visiting Capulin Volcano in the winter, check the weather, what time the sunsets and the Park website. Check at the Visitor Center for up to date trail conditions; be sure you have weather appropriate clothes and shoes before hitting the trail. Learn more about hiking preparedness at Capulin Volcano.
