Summer hours from Memorial Day to Labor Day
Volcano Road is open to vehicles 8:00am to 5:00pm. Hiking or bicycling up Volcano Road is allowed after the road is closed to vehicles.
Winter hours from Labor Day to Memorial Day
Volcano Road is open 8:30am to 4:00pm. Hiking or bicycling up Volcano Road is allowed after the road is closed to vehicles.
Capulin Volcano National Monument is open from dawn to dusk for all trails on the lower areas of the monument and hiking or biking on Volcano Road.
The Night Sky Viewing area is open 24 hours a day for active sky viewing. No Camping Allowed.
The Visitor Center and Volcano Road are open year round with the exception of Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Days.
The Visitor Center is open daily in summer from Memorial Day to Labor Day from 8:00am to 5:30pm. In winter Labor Day to Memorial Day from 8:30am to 4:30pm.
Vehicles may travel to the volcano rim only during Volcano Road hours. The park is open all winter (weather permitting) except Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day. The park will close if the state highway to the Monument is closed. The Volcano Road can close at the discretion of park staff due to inclement weather (thunderstorms) or road conditions.
Capulin Volcano is relatively uncrowded and quiet October through March. Visitation is lowest in January and February. Visitation is highest from April through September. June and July are the busiest months at the park, with approximately 15,000 to 20,000 visitors. Mid-day during summer with heavy visitation usually necessitates traffic control which may result in delays of sometimes up to one hour for visiting the volcano rim.
