Spring is a time of renewal and new beginnings. Leaves begin to show on trees that have been bare all winter long, wildlife who have been tucked away during the colder months begin to reappear, and a wide array of birds make their way back north. As the snow and ice melt, visitors begin to trade their snowmobiles for motorboats and their cross country skis for canoes. Here are some things to consider before a spring visit:

Spring Weather

Spring temperatures in Voyageurs National Park can greatly vary. Winter activities like snowmobiling and cross country skiing are still active through the first half of March, but warmer temperatures begin to close trails toward the end of the month. As temperatures warm and the lake begins to thaw, there is a period of time where it is unsafe to try and venture onto the ice. Please check the alerts and conditions page and before you come to the park so that you'll know what to expect. While warm spells can bring temperatures upwards of 80°F in May, it is not uncommon to get winter storms that bring measurable snowfalls into late April or early May. Knowing that the weather this time of year can be unpredictable, it's always a good idea to check the weather forecast. Dress in layers!
