Where in the World is Petrified Forest Virtual Field Trip

Is your classroom too far away to visit the park? Don't worry, you can still connect with a ranger! The Where in the World is Petrified Forest program is for Grades 4-6. This program is an introduction to the environment that existed during the Late Triassic, Plate Tectonics, and Geography. It consists of 90 minutes of pre-program classroom activities with a 45 minute live video conference with a ranger.

Students role play a day in the life of a pet animal and then sort pictures of a variety of animals into “wild” or “domestic” categories with the option of making collages of each category. Ann Axtell was a prominent archeologist, artist, and author. Ann spent much of her time recording and painting architecture, petroglyphs and pictographs, landscapes, and expedition work. Student Phenology for Outdoor Citizens (SPOC)

Student Phenology for Outdoor Citizens (SPOC) is a citizen science program focusing on the plants and animals of the park. It has pre- and post-visit lessons, as well as a ranger-guided hike where students make natural history observations. Fourth grade classes are eligible for the National Park Foundation's Open Outdoors for Kids grant funds, which includes free snacks and/or lunches. Please inquire about other travel grant funding for other grade levels.
National Park Legacy - Wildlife in Cities Grades K - 2

Coexisting with wildlife requires that actions be taken to reduce conflicts and minimize impacts from human activity so that a healthy appreciation of wildlife can be fostered. Specifically addressed in this lesson are efforts SMMNRA is making to encourage residents to clean up unintentional food resources such as pet food, and secure trash cans so that unwanted wildlife do not seek food on personal property.

Students will participate in a guided learning activity inside of the Rainbow Forest Museum identifying and matching replica fossil bones of Late Triassic animals to the museum exhibits. Students will work in groups or pairs to answer questions about the animals and present their answers to the whole class.
