In this investigation, students study the identification and monitoring of humpback whales in Glacier Bay National Park. Students will identify individual humpback whales by their fluke markings. Exploring Andersonville: A Self-guiding Prison Site Walking Tour

The site of the Camp Sumter Military Prison, commonly known as Andersonville, is preserved as part of the Andersonville NationalHistoric Site. Today a grassy field punctuated with stakes to mark the location of the deadline and stockade wall, the prison site provides a unique opportunity to explore the experiences of the 45,000 prisoners of war held here in 1864-65. Walk around a safe outside space with adult supervision and make a mark every time you see an example of food, water, shelter, and space. These are what animals need in their habitats to survive. You can write in a little dot, a checkmark, or you can even draw a little picture. Hint: A shelter could be a nest or a house, but remember it could also be the area underneath a log! Try with a partner and compare what you find!

During the Open Range Cattle Era of the late 1800s, one of the most valued cowboy skills involved reading. Cattle brands, or hot irons used to mark cattle ownership, were the only way to tell whose cattle belonged to who on the open range. In this lesson, students will learn how to “read” the mysterious symbols used on cattle brands. They will also take on the role of cowboys and use their brand reading skills to find cattle thieves, called rustlers.

Nature hikes are a great way to explore outdoor areas, and Saratoga National Historical Park’s main hiking trail, the 4+ mile Wilkinson Trail, has much to offer. Named for British mapmaker Lieutenant William Wilkinson, the trail has a shorter, 2 mile option useful with students. This activity sheet accompanies the 2-mile hike, encouraging students to look around them and engage with the natural world around them.
