Lesson 4 - ESCAPE

Escape the Battlefield, Win the War!

The Southern Campaign of the American Revolution was the catalyst for the eventual surrender of General Cornwallis and the British at Yorktown, Virginia. Students will be given an escape room mystery to solve related to certain battles of the Southern Campaign. They will have 60 minutes to solve the given mystery and get out of the escape room.

15 years before slavery was abolished in the United States and a little more than 100 miles from the safety of Pennsylvania, Harriet Tubman operated on the edge of freedom. Born in Dorchester County, Maryland, in 1822, Tubman emancipated herself from slavery in 1849 at age 27. She earned the nickname “Moses” for risking her own life about 13 times to guide more than 70 people—many of them family and friends she had left behind—from lives in slavery to new lives in freedom.

Canada Goose Migration

Many bird populations migrate, and the most common pattern involves flying north in the spring to breed in the temperate or Arctic summer, then returning in the fall to wintering grounds in warmer regions to the south. The longer days of the northern summer provide greater opportunities for breeding birds to feed their young. Many northern-breeding ducks, geese, and swans also are migrants, but need only to move from their northern breeding grounds far enough south to escape frozen waters.

Saving History: The White House, Dolley Madison and the War of 1812

PATERRES Part 1: ALTARS

This is a two part lesson. Students will read the section Paterres in the text. This relates to the artistic/spiritual practice of building small altars. They will analyze the reading through use of an organizer, and analyze photographs using the photograph analysis template developed by the National Archives. In Part Two students will create their own altars that reflect their beliefs. The altars do not have to be religious in nature.
