Ecosystem Explorers
- Type: Distance Learning
- Grade Levels: Upper Elementary: Third Grade through Fifth Grade

Due to changes in elevation, precipitation, and temperature within Rocky Mountain National Park, the ecosystems found here are extremely diverse. Join an education ranger and become ecosystem explorers on a mission to uncover the biodiversity found in each ecosystem! Students will research one of Rocky's four ecosystems before connecting with an education ranger and will present their findings during the live program. Rangers will elaborate on each ecosystem, showing videos

Fabulous Fjord Ecosystem
- Type: Distance Learning
- Grade Levels: Middle School: Sixth Grade through Eighth Grade

Fjord estuary ecosystems only exists in 6 places around the world! Students will explore this unique environment, observe the plants and animals that thrive here and consider the interconnected systems that maintain its delicate balance. This program discusses the transfer of energy within food webs and changes in community/population dynamics. Students will have the opportunity to dive into humans’ role in this ecosystem and their local ecosystems.

Middle School: Ecosystem Comparison
- Type: Field Trips
- Grade Levels: Middle School: Sixth Grade through Eighth Grade
Students will compare the biotic and abiotic factors of a forest and a dune ecosystem, enabling them to discover why the dunes are a challenging, yet unique ecosystem. Students will also learn that animals and plants have developed adaptations that help them live or travel through the dunes.
Coral Reefs: Ecosystems Dissolving
- Type: Lesson Plan
- Grade Levels: Middle School: Sixth Grade through Eighth Grade

Corals face in our modern world, a great threat due to a projected change in water chemistry in the ocean due to global warming. Just as carbon dioxide (the main greenhouse gas causing global warming) is increasing in the air, it also increases in seawater in its dissolved form. That makes seawater more acidic which, in turn, may slow the rate at which corals build their calcium carbonate skeletons.

Plant Adaptations in the Sub-alpine Forest Ecosystem
- Type: Lesson Plan
- Grade Levels: Upper Elementary: Third Grade through Fifth Grade

This lesson plan is built for use on a ranger or teacher guided nature walk at Cedar Breaks. Students will learn about plant adaptations to the sub-alpine forest ecosystem. After learning to identify five of the most common sub-alpine trees and shrubs, students will engage in a hands on study of a one-meter plot of forest. The class then will discuss how the plants are uniquely adapted to long cold winters as well as how forests adapt to changing environmental conditions.
