Science Fridays at Indiana Dunes Speaker Series

The speaker series is a monthly event designed to share information on a range of topics related to natural and cultural resources of the Indiana Dunes and the Great Lakes. Presenters may include local scientists, resource managers, community partners, federal and non-federal agency partners, and educators. Presentations are generally aimed at a young adult and adult audience, they are open to families and any science-minded, nature-loving, curious people.

All of the lands that make up the United States today were exclusively Indigenous lands long before Europeans first arrived about 500 years ago. The growth of the United States through westward expansion challenged traditional ways of life for many Indigenous tribes during the 1800s as more settlers crossed the Mississippi River for a new life in the West.

Students learn how the design of the National Park Service arrowhead is made up of symbols, and then have a chance to create their own design specific to Hawai‘i. We will then be introducing ways that we can help care for our parks through the 7 Leave No Trace principles, and help students to understand that the National Parks belong to each and every one of us!
