Abraham and Elizabeth Bryan and their children, who resided in this house on Cemetery Ridge south of Gettysburg, fled their home prior to the battle. As African Americans living in southern Pennsylvania, they faced the real risk of being kidnapped by Confederate soldiers and taken south to be sold into slavery. Upon returning to their home, they discovered tremendous devastation to their property as a result of the battle.

Henry O. Flipper was born enslaved and became the first African American officer and graduate from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1877. However, during his fifth year of service, on June 30, 1882, he was dishonorably discharged from the Army. Flipper fought to regain his honor for the rest of his life. He continued to serve as a public servant, working for the Department of the Interior as well as an engineer.

Future Civil War Major General and President Ulysses S. Grant, started developing his leadership skills as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Battle of Resaca de la Palma. Grant’s Memoirs, written 39 years after the battle, mentioned his experience in the battle. Students review a primary and secondary document about the Battle of Resaca de la Palma. The primary document is part of Grant’s Memoirs. The secondary document is a lithograph of the Battle. Afterwards, they answer questions about the documents.
