Other types of energy and mineral development external to park units may include: development oil and gas and associated infrastructure such as pipelines, hardrock mining, and development of common variety minerals (sand and gravel). These activities occur on adjacent federal lands, state owned lands, and private property. When addressing external energy and mineral development, the NPS carries out its protection mandate by working with the lead federal or state permitting agency to identify alternative locations for the proposal that would avoid park resources, identify mitigation measures to protect park resources, and apply applicable laws and regulations to protect park resources and values.
