Built in the 1870's, Battery East was constructed to withstand the heavy ordnance that had made multi-tiered masonry forts like Fort Point obsolete in the Civil War. You can view the earthen works and brick-lined magazines built to protect large Rodman guns and their ammunition. There are beautiful vistas of the Golden Gate, the San Francisco Bay and downtown. Picnic tables are nearby. |
