Tuesday, September 24, 2013 Forwarded to Park Wavelengths Subscribers Tuesday, September 24, 2013 The parking lot immediately next to the Bear Valley Visitor center will be closed while it is being paved and striped beginning at 7 am Wednesday, September 25 through Friday, September 27. Limantour Road repairs begin Monday, September 30 and will last through October 31. The road will be closed at the gate near Kule Loklo as of 8 am Monday through Friday and will reopen at 5 pm each day. The road is open weekends. The road is being repaired where a culvert collapse occurred. We will keep you posted as to when these areas are reopened. Tuesday, September 19, 2013 Bear Valley picnic area, the Earthquake Trail, and restrooms are open as of 1 pm today, Thursday, September 19. Look sharp: a yellow jacket ground nest was disturbed in the clearing and hopefully no more will be discovered! Tuesday, September 17, 2013 Subject: Bear Valley Closures The Bear Valley picnic area, restrooms at the Earthquake Trailhead, and the Earthquake Trail remain closed due to the large downed Douglas fir which fell on Saturday. Debris is being removed. We will keep you posted as to when it is cleared. Tuesday, September 10, 2013 The Harvest Moon, the full moon closest to the autumnal equinox of September 22, rises on September 18. Leaves are dropping everywhere from the California Buckeye trees. Look for the fuzzy green "tennis balls" forming. These pods hold a fleshy chestnut brown seed. Bay trees also have their small lemon colored pods, the outer coat of which will become purple when the nut inside is ripe. Gray squirrels are scrambling through trees, barking away in their fall mating season. These avid climbers make a raspy, barking sound to attract mates. The park hosts a naturalization ceremony on Friday, September 20 at the Bear Valley Picnic Area beginning at 11 am. New citizens will be sworn in and welcomed. The event is open to the public. On Saturday, September 21, Limantour Beach will benefit from California Coastal Cleanup Day. Meet at the main Limantour Beach parking lot at 10 am to clean up the beach. A mapping service vehicle has been on park roads to take information on the Lighthouse routes; finishing up this week. |
