Beach wheelchairs and walkers, designed for use in the soft sand of the beach, are available to borrow from the visitor center free of charge. The wheelchairs and walkers are available first come, first served, and can only be used on Malaquite Beach. A wooden boardwalk leads from the visitor center deck down to the beach.

The assistance of a second person is required to operate and push the beach wheelchairs. Beach walkers are operable by one person.

Ask a ranger in the visitor center to check out a beach wheelchair or walker. Reservations are not accepted.

Things to consider

  • Please do not take the beach wheelchairs and walkers into the parking lot. The inflated tires my become punctured on the rough surface. A standard wheelchair is available for transfers to and from the parking lot.

  • Beach wheelchairs and walkers may be checked out for up to four hours at a time. If other visitors are not waiting for the wheelchair or walker, you may check it out for additional time.

  • The beach wheelchairs and walkers are only allowed for use on Malaquite Beach in front of the visitor center. They may not be transported in a vehicle to other areas of the park.

  • The beach wheelchairs and walkers located in the park are not designed to float. Taking them into the waves, even the smallest of waves, may cause the chair to tip over which may result in serious injury or even death.

  • The beach wheelchairs and walkers are mobility devises, solely for use by people with limited mobility. They may not be used to transport belongings to the beach.

  • The weight capacity of the beach wheelchairs and walker is 350 lbs.

  • Only one person at a time is allowed to sit and ride in the beach wheelchairs and walkers.

  • All beach wheelchairs and walkers must be returned to the visitor center no later than 4:45 pm on the day it was borrowed.
