The Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act (FLREA) allows the NPS to collect and retain revenue and requires that park fee revenue be used to enhance the visitor experience. At least 80% of the money stays in the park where it is collected, and the other 20% is used to benefit parks that do not collect fees.
Funds generated by the fees are used to accomplish projects the parks have been unable to fund through yearly Congressional allocations. Your entrance and campground fees help Padre Island National Seashore complete important projects that directly benefit you and other park visitors.
Recent projects made possible with your fee dollars include:
Remodeling of visitor center showers.
Visitor center boardwalk stabilization.
Replacement of building siding and weatherproofing on the visitor center.
Installation of building anchoring hardware on the visitor center.
Replacement of decking materials on visitor center observation decks.
Installation of new HVAC systems at the visitor center.
Rehabilitation and construction of new fee collection station.
Coordination of emergency dispatch operations with Kleberg County.
Repairing Bird Island Basin boat ramp.
Replacement of the Malaquite Campground lift station.
