The National Park Service (NPS) invites the public to provide input on a study to determine the feasibility and suitability of designating a future National Heritage Area that includes the Great Dismal Swamp and other areas in the state of North Carolina and the Commonwealth of Virginia. The 60-day comment period for the Great Dismal Swamp National Heritage Area Feasibility Study will extend from March 19 to May 19, 2025.

The National Park Service and its partners have published a Visitor Use Management Plan for the Virginia Triple Crown Segment of Appalachian National Scenic Trail. The Virginia Triple Crown Segment includes the iconic Dragon’s Tooth, McAfee Knob and Tinker Cliffs areas. This plan will guide long term visitor management in this area.

On February 27, the National Park Service announced it will invest $195 million in Inflation Reduction Act funding to restore and build resilience in the lands and waters that serve as important wildlife and native plant habitats, spaces for recreation and reflection, and memorials to our nation’s history. In the Northeast, an estimated $17 million will go towards projects to safeguard national parks in the face of a changing climate.

A new National Park Service (NPS) report shows that 22,507,067 visitors to national parks in Virginia spent $1,246,900,000 in the state in 2022. That spending resulted in 17,662 jobs and had a cumulative benefit to the state economy of $1,880,500,000.
