Hurricane Ridge Day Lodge Fire
At 4:30 p.m. on May 7, 2023, a law enforcement ranger on patrol reported that the 12,201 square foot Hurricane Ridge Day Lodge, a popular visitor center destination in Olympic National Park, was fully engulfed in flames. Both Clallam County Fire District 2 and Port Angeles Fire Department responded to the fire. By the time the crews arrived the building had collapsed to the foundation.
Park officials say the structure is a complete loss. The building was built in the 1950s and housed interpretive exhibits upstairs and a gift shop and small café run by Aramark, a park concessioner. In the wintertime, the concessioner rented out snowshoes and skis. The majority of the contents of the building had been removed before the start of the rehabilitation work.
Perched at 5,242 feet above sea level with panoramic views of the Bailey Range of the Olympic Mountains, Hurricane Ridge Visitor Center saw countless visitors come and go from its construction in 1952 to May 7, 2023, when it burned down.
After a year full of challenges, Olympic National Park is excited to announce the Hurricane Ridge Road and recreation area will open for the winter season on the day after Thanksgiving.
Beginning on October 16, American Abatement & Demo of Auburn, WA, under contract with the National Park Service, will demolish and remove the remaining Hurricane Ridge Day Lodge debris. This critical step in the ongoing efforts to restore visitor services and ensure public safety will require a temporary closure of the area.
As Olympic National Park staff continue to work to restore access to Hurricane Ridge, utility trenching will be occurring for three weeks starting around September 19. This work will be performed in the Hurricane Ridge parking lot and will allow the park to re-establish long-term utilities, such as water, wastewater, and electricity to the Hurricane Ridge area. This work will require short-term closures of the road to the Hurricane Hill trailhead and will cause a temporary reduction in parking spaces in the Hurricane Ridge parking lot.
Fire suppression efforts, aided by recent rain and cooler weather, will allow the park to reopen the Hurricane Ridge Road and Obstruction Point Road to all traffic on Saturday, September 2. The fire grew an acre overnight but continues to smolder and remain manageable. However, if dry conditions persist or fire activity increases, the area may need to be closed again to support fire suppression efforts.
A lightning strike on August 28, 2023 started a wildfire below Hurricane Ridge parking lot necessitating precautionary evacuation and closure of Hurricane Ridge Road. Firefighters initiated suppression efforts immediately. Hurricane Ridge Road and area will remain closed until the hazard is diminished.
Hurricane Ridge Road will be closed to visitors, including cyclists, from August 15-17 to help facilitate the removal of debris from the Hurricane Ridge Day Lodge burn site. This debris removal is necessary to allow for the investigation into the fire to continue.
The investigation into the cause of the fire that burned down the Hurricane Ridge Day Lodge continues. Investigators have completed a preliminary examination and are planning additional steps necessary to complete the investigation. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
Access to Hurricane Ridge will be limited. Due to restroom capacity, the daily limit is 315 vehicles with the parking area supporting 175 vehicles at a time. Once capacity is reached for the day, the road will close to private vehicles. The park will monitor the entry system and make adjustments as needed, including to daily vehicle capacity.
Olympic National Park hopes to re-open the Hurricane Ridge area to visitors this summer, but significant work remains to be done, according to park officials.
Days after a fire burned down the iconic Hurricane Ridge Day Lodge, third-party certified fire investigators are examining the site to determine the cause and origin of the blaze. Destruction of the building destroyed infrastructure critical to the operation of this popular part of the park. Park officials are developing plans to remove building debris once the investigation is completed, secure the area, and provide restrooms and other necessary services to ensure visitors can safely enjoy the area soon.
