Fort Des Moines is a military installation in Des Moines, Iowa. During World War I, the fort served as the first and only training site for African American officers. From July 1775 through April 1776, General George Washington used the abandoned Vassall House in Cambridge as his military headquarters during the Siege of Boston. In order to organize, administer, and command the army, Washington relied on his council of war, comprised of the senior-ranking general officers, and his "military family," comprised of the staff of secretaries and aides de camp at headquarters.

A lawyer and influential secretary to George Washington, Robert Harrison helped manage the paperwork and communication for Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. Despite personal struggles, he left Virginia in the beginning of the war to serve as an aide-de-camp at Washington’s headquarters in Cambridge. Harrison became a trusted and dependable secretary to Washington during the war and went on to become the chief judge of Maryland.

The park’s first ranger, Harry Karstens, arrived in 1921. After a summer of meeting people, and a long patrol through the park, Karstens began clearing land for his headquarters on the northwest bank of Riley Creek. The location offered an ideal place to monitor people using the trail leading west to the park, but proved to be incredibly cold in winter—which led to its move in 1925, to a hillside offering much milder winter temps!

Did you know that soil will have different characteristics depending on where you are in Denali? For six summers, scientists completed a soil survey that mapped soils across the park. Denali's Mountain Vista

13 miles inside Denali National Park, along the park's sole road, is Mountain Vista. It is accessible from late winter through fall for private vehicles, and by a free bus from the visitor center in summer. The area offers picnic tables, trail access, and—when skies are clear—a great view of Denali, even though the mountain is over 80 miles away. In summer, it's often far less crowded than nearby Savage River (Mile 15).
