Before heading out on the trail, be sure to stop by the Trail Center located on Broadway between 5th and 6th ave. The Chilkoot Trail CenterOpen daily Memorial Day to Labor Day, this is the registration and information center for the Chilkoot Trail. Stop by to pick up your Chilkoot Trail permit, see the bear awareness video, and get your trail orientation. Picking Up Your PermitYou must pick up your Chilkoot Trail permit in person at the Trail Center in Skagway, located on Broadway between 5th and 6th Avenues. You must have the physical permit with you when you hike. Learn how to reserve your permit in advance.Pre-hike OrientationTrail orientations are mandatory and scheduled at 8am, 10am, noon, 2pm, and 4pm daily during the permit season. Please allow approximately 30 minutes for an orientation. The 8am orientation is often very busy and can take longer. Everyone hiking must attend, not just the permit holder. Hikers are encouraged to view an optional 13 minute bear safety video that is shown before and after orientations, as well as on demand throughout the day.Current ConditionsDuring the hiking season, Trail Center staff checks in with trail rangers and wardens every morning and evening. They know the latest information on current trail conditions, any obstacles or challenges, and bear activity along the trail. Staff also updates the Chilkoot Trail Conditions report weekly. |
