Field trips to the French Quarter Visitor Center are temporarily discontinued. The park's French Quarter Visitor Center in New Orleans houses a museum highlighting the nature, culture, and history of Louisiana's Mississippi River Delta region. Field Trip Information for Teachers Plan like a Park Ranger! Be prepared for your field trip and learn about our facility below.
Buses should unload and load students on Bienville St. at N. Peters (not in front of the visitor center). The group will have to walk the two blocks to the French Quarter Visitor Center. Buses may only load/unload for 15 minutes. Buses can drive on Decatur St., but they are not able to park on Decatur St. The French Quarter Visitor CEnter does not provide any parking, so the bus driver must find their own parking location. For more information about where to park and load buses in New Orleans, see here. For bus rules and regulations in New Orleans, see here.
A water fountain is available at the French Quarter Visitor Center, but there are no food or drinks to purchase. Although a lunch break is not included in the program, you are welcome to plan to eat your bag lunches outside in our courtyard. Lunch bags and drinks must be left in the school bus during your programming. Dispose of Waste Properly. Take all trash with you. Leave what you find. Leave all natural objects where you find them. Respect wildlife. Observe wildlife from a distance and never feed them. Be considerate of other visitors. Avoid loud voices and noises. Food, drinks, chewing gum, and candy are not allowed in the visitor center. Food particles attract pests that could be harmful to the exhibits. Please leave lunches and drinks on the bus. Remember this is a visitor center! People from all over the world come to learn about history and culture. Please show respect by being polite and attentive. Stay with your group! Pay close attention, follow directions, and stay together so we may complete your program. Be aware of your surroundings and don’t run. Keep yourself and others safe by being respectful and walking in the building. Students must be accompanied by a chaperone in the gift shop. Each of our park sites has a gift shop filled with items specific to the history, nature, and culture of its location. If students enter the gift shop, chaperones must accompany students and monitor them. Don’t play in the fountain or planting areas in the courtyard. Practice Leave No Trace, and respect our facilities. No pets are allowed in visitor center or courtyard. Service animals are allowed anywhere you wish to go. For more information about service animals, visit our Service Animal page. Plan early! Jean Lafitte requires a chaperone for every ten students. Extra chaperones are welcome.
If your program takes place inside our facility, consider bringing a light jacket or sweater. If your program takes place outside on our grounds, plan for the weather. Bring sunscreen, a hat, closed toed shoes, a water bottle, and rain gear.
