MCLEAN, Va. — As part of the next phase of the North Parkway Rehabilitation Project, the National Park Service (NPS) will temporarily close the southbound lanes of the George Washington Memorial Parkway (GWMP) between Route 123 and Spout Run Parkway. This is to prepare the work zone for the upcoming traffic shift between Route 123 and Windy Run Bridge anticipated in late January.

All southbound traffic will be detoured to Route 123 and Glebe Road to re-enter Spout Run Parkway beginning at 10 p.m. on Friday, January 31 through 5 p.m. Sunday, February 2. During this time, both southbound lanes will be closed to allow crews to relocate a temporary traffic barrier and create a work zone along the right lane. Once complete, crews will then shift traffic to the newly constructed northbound lanes between Route 123 and Windy Run Bridge.

Starting at 5 p.m. Sunday, February 2 through late 2025, drivers will use the inner (left) southbound lane while the outer (right) southbound lane is closed for construction activities. Only a single southbound lane will be open at all times, including during rush hour, between the Route 123 interchange and Windy Run Bridge. There will be two northbound lanes during the evening rush hour from 2:45 – 7:15 p.m. and one lane in each direction at all other times. This traffic pattern is expected to extend from Windy Run Bridge to Spout Run Parkway in late February in another traffic shift.

Motorists are reminded to proceed with caution through work zones, watch out for crews and road debris, and observe the speed limit. Message boards and orange construction signs along the parkway provide important information and directions, and drivers can see construction updates and opt-in to receive emails about traffic changes, meetings and major project milestones on the project webpage.
