GRAND PORTAGE, Minn. – On November 3, 2024, Grand Portage National Monument will transition to winter hours. The Heritage Center will be open from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Monday - Saturday and closed on Sundays.
On September 15, 2024, the Heritage Center and Historic Depot will transition to fall hours.
Hours for the Heritage Center are 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., and the hours for the Historic Depot will be 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. thru
October 14, 2024.
On May 25, 2024, the Historic Depot at Grand Portage National Monument will be open to the public for the 2024 season. Hours for the Heritage Center and Historic Depot will be 9:00 am - 5:00 pm, 7 days a week.
Construction to realign a portion of Mile Creek Road and construct a new bridge over Grand Portage Creek will begin on May 28th, 2024, with anticipated completion in Fall 2024. During construction, the roadway will continue to be open and single lane. Visitors are encouraged to plan and prepare for delays.
On May 27, 2023 the Historic Depot will be open to the public for the 2023 season. Hours for the Heritage Center and Historic Depot will be 9:30 am – 5:30 pm daily.
The NPS has selected an alternative for implementation which will remove an existing blind curve. A portion of the original asphalt would be left in place as a walking path, and the road would be re-routed across a new bridge.
Cook County, Minnesota and the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa (Ojibwe), in partnership with the Grand Portage National Monument, propose to realign a segment of Mile Creek Road/County State Aid Highway 17 and construct a new bridge across Grand Portage Creek. The purpose of this EA is to evaluate the potential impacts of constructing a new bridge across Grand Portage Creek to reduce the hazard caused by a blind curve, eliminate traffic and plowing impacts on an existing historic bridge, and increase pedestrian access.
Assistant Secretary Newland met with leaders from the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and visited the Grant Portage National Monument to learn about the Tribe’s co-management agreement with National Park Service.
National Park Service (NPS) Regional Director Bert Frost announced the selection of Heather Boyd as the new superintendent of Grand Portage National Monument in Minnesota. Boyd is currently the Administrative Officer at Isle Royale National Park and Keweenaw National Historical Park located in Michigan. She will assume her new role later this summer.
