Golden Gate National Recreation Area Announces Memorandum of Understanding With the City of Sausalito

San Francisco, CA - Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) and the City of Sausalito (Sausalito) have signed an agreement to work together on issues of mutual importance. Formalized through a memorandum of understanding, signed in late August 2018, the two agencies have agreed to work toward addressing safety, transportation and congestion concerns in Sausalito and the Marin Headlands, and to collaborate on future planning for the areas of GGNRA adjacent to Sausalito, such as Fort Baker.

This important agreement is intended to memorialize a shared vision and mutual commitment to sound regional public transportation planning in the future through regular consultation with each other. The agreement also concludes important discussions with Sausalito around the Alcatraz Ferry Embarkation final Environmental Impact Statement, which includes the potential for future limited ferry service between Pier 31½ in San Francisco and the existing Fort Baker pier. 

As part of completing consultation with the Bay Conservation and Development Commission as required under the Coastal Zone Management Act, and prior to initiating limited ferry service from Pier 31½ to Fort Baker, the National Park Service (NPS) has agreed to meet and confer with Sausalito on the proposed rehabilitation and management of the historic Fort Baker pier in sufficient time for due consideration of Sausalito's interests.

GGNRA Superintendent Laura E. Joss said "With this agreement, the National Park Service achieves our longstanding goal to further our relationship with the City of Sausalito and continue to work on visitor facilities in the park and its adjacent communities. We look forward to a close and continuing partnership with Sausalito into the future."

This agreement represents another important milestone for Fort Baker's transition from a former military post to a unit of GGNRA. The post was transferred to the NPS in August 2002, and follows important discussions with Sausalito in 2002-2005 regarding the retreat and conference center at Fort Baker, now the Cavallo Point Lodge. 

GGNRA is a diverse park with an abundance of recreational opportunities, as well as natural, cultural, and scenic resources. The park encompasses more than 80,000 acres across three counties. GGNRA also administers two other NPS sites, Fort Point National Historic Site, a Civil War era fortress built on the northernmost point of land in San Francisco, and Muir Woods National Monument, which comprises an impressive stand of old growth coastal redwoods in Marin County.
