Renewable Energy

Golden Gate National Recreation Area purchases 100% renewable electricity for our park buildings, thanks to the combination of initiatives described below. Many of these programs are available to park employees and visitors as well.

Purchase or installation of renewable energy should always come after all efforts to improve energy efficiency and conservation. GGNRA has worked with our utility provider to attain energy efficiency rebates for projects such as lighting retrofits and efficient heating, and many of these rebates are available to residential customers as well.

  • Electricity in Marin is provided by MCE Clean Energy. MCE provides 100% renewable energy, such as wind, solar, and geothermal, through their Deep Green program.
  • Electricity in San Francisco is purchased from CleanPowerSF. GGNRA participates in the SuperGreen program through CleanPowerSF, which provides renewable energy from wind and solar.
  • Electricity in the Presidio is purchased through the Presidio Trust. The Trust has a master meter for the Presidio and has purchased renewable energy credits between 2017-2019 that made the site 100% renewable. These RECs are no longer purchased.
  • Electricity on Alcatraz comes from a combination of solar photovoltaics and diesel generators. A solar microgrid system installed in 2012 provides up to 50% of the annual electrical demand on the island. The rest of the energy comes from diesel generators. The park concessioner Alcatraz City Cruises purchased carbon offsets up until 2020 to compensate for the diesel usage.
