Birthplace to host events for Washington’s 293rd Birthday on February 22

COLONIAL BEACH, VA. —George Washington Birthplace National Monument and the Northern Neck National Heritage Area invite the public to celebrate the 293rd birthday of our nation’s first president in the park on February 22. Special events for visitors of all ages will celebrate Washington’s legacy in the place where it began.

A birthday party to commemorate Washington’s life will take place at 2 p.m. at the park’s traditional seat of hospitality, the Log House.

Inside the visitor center, staff will unveil a new exhibit titled George Washington’s Birthplace in 50 Objects. This compelling exhibition will feature artifacts from the park’s museum collection, many of which have never been seen by the public. Items include decorative jewelry, a Spanish real and a window from John Washington’s 17th-century house.

Festivities in the Memorial Area will include colonial cooking demonstrations in the cozy atmosphere of the Colonial Revival Kitchen and an open house at the Memorial House Museum from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visitors can explore the museum at their leisure, with park rangers available to answer questions. A display inside the museum will introduce a new ink stamp commemorating the 300th anniversary of Washington’s birth in 2032. Bring your own items to stamp or use park-provided cardstock. Rangers will also invite visitors to share their ideas on how to commemorate the tricentennial of Washington’s birth.
