Virginia Spiraea

Six weeks throughout September and October is Gauley season, where thousands of people from around the world come to experience the world-class whitewater of the Gauley River National Recreation Area. While the whitewater is what gets most of the attention on the Gauley River, the park is also home to a rare and threatened species.

Virginia spiraea is a plant in the rose family that thrives in rocky floodplain habitats along rivers in Appalachia. Populations have decreased significantly throughout the plant's range, leading to it being listed as a threatened species through the Endangered Species Act. Learn about how the National Park Service and the US Fish & Wildlife Service are working to support Virginia spiraea recovery in Gauley River National Recreation Area.
