Virginia SpiraeaSix weeks throughout September and October is Gauley season, where thousands of people from around the world come to experience the world-class whitewater of the Gauley River National Recreation Area. While the whitewater is what gets most of the attention on the Gauley River, the park is also home to a rare and threatened species.Virginia spiraea is a plant in the rose family that thrives in rocky floodplain habitats along rivers in Appalachia. Populations have decreased significantly throughout the plant's range, leading to it being listed as a threatened species through the Endangered Species Act.
