Gauley River National Recreation Area – 2026 Boating Season Notice

Welcome to the 2026 Gauley boating season. NPS staff are preparing put‑ins, take‑outs, roads, parking areas, and other public-use facilities for the upcoming season.
Boater Safety & Conduct
Use good judgment on the Gauley, including at Pillow Rock and Sweet’s Falls. Rangers have received increased complaints of disorderly conduct and unauthorized boarding of other watercraft. Jumping into or boarding another boater’s craft without permission is prohibited and may result in citations or arrest. Please respect fellow boaters to help ensure a safe and enjoyable river experience.
Summersville Dam & Camping
Tailwaters Campground will be closed September 11–28 to increase parking capacity and improve traffic flow. Battle Run Campground and private campgounds will remain open. Put-ins and take-outs will operate as in past years, with anticipated improvements from added parking. If parking reaches capacity, incoming traffic may be temporarily halted. A 15‑minute unloading zone is available near the bathrooms; do not stage boats in parking spaces to reserve spots.
Mason’s Branch
Parking is limited and typically fills daily. The access road will close once parking reaches capacity. American Whitewater is leasing Legg Field for private boater parking, with a cleared walking trail to the river. Law Enforcement generally opens the access road around 1:00 p.m. after commercial bus traffic decreases. Vehicles obstructing roads or parking areas will be towed.
Road Safety
Use caution and obey speed limits, especially on Panther Mountain Road with its narrow, blind‑curve sections. Commercial buses require extra space. Allow ample travel time and respect residents living along these routes.
Commercial Shuttle Service
Hills to Hills Tour and Shuttle (https://www.hillstohills.com, 304‑640‑8122) is the only NPS‑permitted commercial shuttle on the New and Gauley Rivers. Other operators may lack required permits or insurance, and using unauthorized services may violate federal law.
Emergency Services & River Patrols
NPS provides daily EMS and SAR river patrols during scheduled releases. Patrols carry AEDs and medical supplies. In emergencies, Rangers may request reduced flows from Summersville Dam; warnings will be communicated via signs, signal flags, and website updates through NPS and American Whitewater.
Private Property
Respect private land. Gated roads, posted areas, and private property are not public access points. Unauthorized entry may result in citations or arrest.
