Park Staff and Volunteers to Recognize Veterans Day and end of the season closures and events.

Farmington, PA- The National Park Service invites the public to celebrate Veterans Day at Fort Necessity National Battlefield. On November 9 and 10, 2024, park staff and volunteers will display a military timeline of service. The timeline ranges from the 18th century to the early 20th century. This free program includes a display of equipment, camp life and weapon demonstrations. The program takes place from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. both days at the fort on the historic battlefield, rain or shine.

“It is exciting for the public to see soldiers from the 18th through the 20th century at Fort Necessity,” said Fort Necessity National Battlefield Superintendent Stephen M. Clark. “During this important holiday, it is wonderful to see our staff provide this event for our visitors. I hope they have a meaningful visit.”

Veterans Day, held each year on November 11, began as Armistice Day to commemorate the end of World War I. In addition to the remembrance, it is also an opportunity to celebrate our veterans and their service.

Following the close of business on Sunday, November 3, 2024, the Mount Washington Tavern, the park’s picnic area and the Jumonville Glen unit of Fort Necessity will close for the season.

On Saturday October 26, 2024, a special graveyard walking tour of Friendship Hill National Historic Site will be conducted by park staff. The tour will visit both Sophia’s grave site and the Clare Cemetery and leave the house at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. In the event of weather, please call the park at 724-329-2501 for possible cancellation of event. Visitors are reminded to dress for the weather and to wear sturdy shoes or boots.
