Alexander Stephens served in Georgia’s state legislature and US Congress before his selection as the Vice President of the Confederacy in 1861. After the surrender at Appomattox Court House, federal soldiers captured Stephens and brought him to Fort Warren in Boston as a prisoner. Following his release, Stephens continued in politics and eventually became the 50th governor of Georgia in 1882.

President Lincoln's leadership of the United States of America through the cataclysm of the Civil War ranks as one of the finest presidencies in American history.

Hailing from a famous acting family, John Wilkes Booth served as a Confederate secret agent and in 1864, began to plan to kidnap Abraham Lincoln. After the fall of Richmond in 1865, his plan changed from kidnapping to assassination. On April 14th, he shot the president at Ford's Theatre.

Union general Lew Wallace made his most important contribution to the war effort in 1864 when his small force of 5,800 men delayed the advance of the Confederate army of General Jubal Early on the Federal capital. After the war, Wallace penned the enormously popular novel "Ben-Hur."

Samuel Mudd, a Maryland physician and Southern sympathizer, was tried and convicted of assisting John Wilkes Booth escape following the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Sentenced to imprisonment at Fort Jefferson off the Florida coast, would his name still be "Mudd" after a yellow fever epidemic overtakes the island fortress?
