A new ten-minute video showing the layers of the Fossil Butte Member and explaining the different techniques used to remove the fossils will premiere Wednesday June 8, 2022 from 11 am to 1 pm. The video was filmed by park volunteer Devin Cherry and features several local fossil quarriers.A new exhibit, the virtual aquarium, was installed in the Fossil Butte Visitor Center in late 2020. You can touch a fossil to see it come to life and swim through the aquarium. Six new exhibits are under construction, including two cases in the restrooms; can you guess what fossils will be displayed? Watch for the grand opening announcement for the new exhibits later this summer.
These new additions are part of a larger plan to update the visitor center to improve visitors’ appreciation for the fossils and geology of Fossil Basin. The monument will continue to apply for projects through the National Park Service’s fee program. National parks that charge entrance fees keep at least 80% of the money collected and the rest goes to a project fund that parks can apply for to complete projects that improve the visitor experience.
The monument does not charge a fee and is open sunrise – sunset. The visitor center is open daily from 8:00am – 5:30pm. There are currently over 400 fossils on display, but the new exhibits will add several thousand more.
