In the spring of 2018, the park premiered “Beneath The Plains: the Minuteman Missile On Alert” after over three years of development. The film is on permanent exhibition at the Minuteman Missile National Historic Site visitor center in South Dakota.

When constructed for the US Air Force in the early 1960s, the last thing designers wanted at active missile facilities was visitors. Since the park began public tours in 2004, the lack of adequate parking had limited access to the sites by visitors and led to damage at both sites.

Concurrent with the design and construction of the visitor center completed in 2014, exhibit design began, focused first on determining themes and perspective in order to develop the best approach for the space available. Completed in 2016, these exhibits lead visitors to make intellectual and emotional connections between the park’s exhibits and their own experiences so that they understand, appreciate, and help preserve the park’s resources.

The collection of entrance fees and sale of passes at Isle Royale National Park directly impacts the sustaining and maintaining of visitor services.

Starting January 1, 2020 Glen Canyon National Recreation Area will enforce park entrance fees at the Ferry Swale Area and collect camping fees at the Beehives Primitive Campground.

The very popular group campsite at the Fort Pickens Area of Gulf Islands National Seashore is set for a major upgrade next week. Starting Monday, contractors will replace the outdated restroom facility at the group campsite with a new facility to better serve campers. The work is expected to be contained within the group camping area and should not impact normal park operations for visitors.

Work has begun in the Fort Pickens Historic District to restore the historic Mine Loading Building and eventually open the building to public use. The project underway is phase one of a three phase project to stabilize and restore the building as an interpretive exhibit space for visitors to learn about the history of the Fort Pickens Area and the Mine Planter Service. The Mine Loading Building is located directly north of the historic masonry fort at the new tour boat pier.

The Sandy Hook Lighthouse is the oldest continuously operating lighthouse in the United States. Over time the lighthouse began to leak, which stained the exterior. This project repaired the leak, improved visitor accessibility, and removed the staining.

Canarsie pier is a major recreation site for the local community. Over time the playground equipment became unsafe, and the playground was closed. This project repaired the base underneath the playground and replaced the playground equipment. The playground is now open for fun.
