On Wednesday April 14, 2021, Fossil Butte National Monument’s scenic drive from the visitor center to the Nature Trail and picnic area will reopen for the season. The drive is a slight incline up to the picnic area where the Nature Trail loop begins and ends. The hike is one-and-a-half miles long, and will open to visitors when the road does. Both the drive and hike give visitors sweeping views of the surrounding buttes, and are prime locations for wildlife viewing, including elk, pronghorn, deer, and moose.

The scenic drive begins just west of the visitor center parking lot. It is recommended to stop in the visitor center first for information and restrooms. The picnic area has a vault toilet, several tables, and a shelter. Please utilize trash and recycling containers. The steep gravel road that continues north of the picnic area remains closed until the ground is drier and conditions become safer for vehicles.

Fossil Butte was set aside to protect diverse, abundant, and well-preserved fossils from the Eocene Epoch in the Green River Formation. The visitor center, which displays more than 400 of these fossils, is open daily in the spring from 8:00am-4:30pm, except Sundays.
