Dinosaur, CO — Dinosaur National Monument is beginning a 14-day public scoping period to update the park’s Fire Management Plan (FMP) starting today, May 13.An updated FMP will ensure fire management within the monument is consistent with current conditions and the latest National Park Service (NPS) guidance, provide for fire personnel and public safety, protect park values and resources, and remain consistent with the park’s resource management objectives.
“An updated Fire Management Plan will inform the management and use of wildland fire in the monument for years to come,” said Michael Guarino, Dinosaur’s Fire Management Officer. “We look forward to the public’s input on these early stages of the plan’s revision.”
The updated plan will provide a framework and parkwide guidelines for the management of all wildfires, regardless of cause, size, or complexity. It will also provide guidance on the use of prescribed fire and non-fire fuels treatments to reduce hazardous fuel loading and accomplish resource protection objectives.
The park’s FMP was last updated in 2004. The 2006 NPS Management Policies require each park unit with burnable vegetation to have an approved FMP. In compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), an Environmental Assessment is required to complete the update.

Scoping comments can be submitted through the PEPC system online (preferred) or by mail to: Fire Management Plan Scoping, Dinosaur National Monument, Attn: Fire Management Officer, 4545 Highway 40, Dinosaur, CO 81610. Comments by email or phone will not be accepted. All comments, both mailed and online, will be accepted through May 27, 2024.
