BRECKSVILLE, Ohio—Cuyahoga Valley National Park (CVNP) will close the Lock 29 parking lot and river access in Peninsula June 24 to December 1, 2024, while a contractor completes riverbank stabilization work. Parking will be available at other nearby locations and visitors will still have access to the Towpath Trail and amenities in the Village of Peninsula.

The park is continuing a riverbank stabilization project to protect the tracks for Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad and the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail that was announced in 2022. The Towpath Trail closure south of Station Road is still in effect on weekdays as part of this ongoing work. The Towpath north of Station Road is closed 24/7 through June 28 for resurfacing and restoring the trail surface following the completion of the riverbank work at that location.

The closures are necessary for public safety while contractors use heavy equipment to complete the work.

When the project, funded by the Great American Outdoors Act (GAOA), is complete in 2025 the public will once again be able to safely enjoy the Towpath Trail and Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad.

Infrastructure funding from GAOA and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law are part of a concerted effort to address the extensive deferred maintenance and repair backlog in national parks. Supported by revenue from energy development, GAOA’s Legacy Restoration Fund provides up to $1.3 billion per year for five years to make significant enhancements in national parks to ensure their preservation and provide opportunities for recreation, education, and enjoyment for current and future visitors.

CVNP encompasses over 33,000 acres along the Cuyahoga River between Cleveland and Akron, Ohio. Managed by the National Park Service, CVNP combines cultural, historical, recreational, and natural resources in one setting.
