Conservancy for CVNP / Sara Curtis

An internship can be a great way to get started in a park-related career. At Cuyahoga Valley you can explore career options related to outdoor education, park management, recreation, natural and cultural resource management, and non-profit management. Some of the benefits of internships include:

Current Internships at Cuyahoga Valley

Habitat Restoration Members (ACE)

Internship timeline: 26 weeks, starting in May 2024
Application timeline: early consideration will be given as applications are received; this position may close at any time

Help the national park's natural resources staff as a member of the restoration and exotic plant management crew. The Habitat Restoration Members will:

  • Help manage exotic plants, using mechanical and chemical controls.
  • Assist with all phases of habitat restoration, including collecting native seeds and cuttings, propagating native plants at the park's nursery, preparing sites for planting, and planting native plants at restoration sites.
  • Have the opportunity to assist with other park projects, such as reintroducing freshwater mussels to the Cuyahoga River; conducting electro-fishing surveys in park waters; monitoring vegetation, wetlands, and birds; and completing surveys of deer and butterflies.

Community Engagement Intern (2 positions)

Dates of internship: mid-May through mid-August (start date is flexible)
Hours: 40 hours per week. Work days will be varied with some evening shifts required.
Location: Dzerzynski House (1558 Boston Mills Rd, Peninsula, 44264)
Assist National Park Service rangers in providing recreational programming to diverse audiences, providing informal interpretive services, and staffing visitor contact stations.
Skills Required:

  • Strong organizational and communication skills (speaking and writing).
  • Experience in coordinating activities for the general public and organized groups.
  • Ability to be self-motivated and to work independently with an energetic and professional attitude.
  • Ability to work well with diverse audiences, especially youth.
  • Comfort in the outdoors.

Other requirements: Applicants must complete a National Park Service Volunteer-in-Parks Agreement and may be subject to a background investigation. U.S. citizenship, valid driver’s license, and reliable transportation required. Local candidates only.
Salary/benefits: No stipend is available. Students may obtain internship credit with university upon approval of academic advisor. Interns are eligible for injury compensation and tort claims the same as federal employees and are considered to be federal employees for those purposes only.
Outcomes: Interns will come away with enhanced communication skills, training in informal and formal interpretation, exposure to working with volunteers and partnership programs in Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Interns will also gain skills working with diverse audiences.
