Transition Zone:Capulin Volcano sits within a landscape of mountains, mesas, and plains with just a touch of desert. Elevations in the park range from approximately 7247 feet at the park visitor center to 8182 feet on the crater rim trail. The park can experience unpredictable weather and strong winds that come with high elevation areas. Warm and layered clothing should be worn or available year round. Summer:Summers usually have mild temperatures with highs averaging in the low to mid 80s F (approximately 30s C). Afternoon thunderstorms (either dry or with rain) are common from May - September. Lightning activity within 10 miles of the Volcano detected by the park lightning detection system will require a closure of the Volcano top for public safety reasons. Winter:Winters average from the low 40s to low 50s F (approximately 4 to 10 C) for highs, but temperatures vary. Snowfall is most common from December into April. Winter storms or blizzards pass through the park frequently resulting in temporary park/road closures. Sunny winter days are some of the most beautiful days to be in the park. Make sure you check out the weather forecast before coming to the park. Current volcano road conditions may be provided by calling (575) 278-2201. |
