The 1846 Applegate Trail, part of the California National Historic Trail, provided a southern route into Oregon. These exhibits tell the story of what happened to Indian tribes, settlers, and miners during the Rogue River Wars.
The Rogue Valley Indian tribes cared for the land; practiced art and function; and shared traditional systems of trade, marriage practices, and dispute resolution. When overland emigrants arrived, their differences in perspectives (such as land ownership) set the stage for tragedy. 
How did The Utmost Good Faith Clause from the 1787 Northwest Ordinance protect Indians? How did the Oregon Donation Land Claim Act of 1850 violate Indian rights? Who paid the price? 
When two of their young children died in the Columbia River rapids, the Applegate brothers knew they must find another way to access Oregon.
You can view these exhibits at the Manzanita Rest Areas north of Grants Pass, Oregon, along I-5. Part of the I-5 corridor parallels the California National Historic Trail.
